New Greenfield Airport Proposed for Hosur; Two Sites Shortlisted – Check Details

The Tamil Nadu government has taken a major step towards establishing a new greenfield airport in Hosur, Krishnagiri district, to meet the growing demands of the region's booming manufacturing sector. Two potential sites near Hosur have been identified for this ambitious project, which aims to enhance infrastructure and fuel economic growth in the area.

Site Selection and Evaluation

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to conduct a detailed study of the two selected sites, located within 20 kilometers of each other. The decision followed a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister M K Stalin. Earlier, a joint team from AAI and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) evaluated four proposed sites in September. These included locations at Thogarai Agraharam, Shoolagiri, Dhasapalli, and near a private airstrip. Among them, the site close to the private airstrip emerged as a promising choice.

The state government is also considering acquiring the private airstrip, depending on successful negotiations with the owning company. A formal request for a detailed study will be made to the AAI soon, marking significant progress in the airport's development.

Project Vision and Capacity

The proposed greenfield airport in Hosur is expected to span over 2,000 acres, with the capacity to handle up to 30 million passengers annually. This project is seen as a game-changer for Tamil Nadu, strengthening the state's position as a leading industrial hub in South India. Hosur, traditionally known for its automotive industry, is rapidly diversifying into advanced manufacturing, electronics, and electric vehicles, making the airport a crucial addition to its infrastructure.

Regional and Economic Impact

Srivats Ram, Chairman of the CII TN State Council, emphasized the strategic importance of the project. He stated, "The proposed airport will become a vital hub for business and logistics across South India, linking Hosur with Bengaluru and spurring growth in nearby districts like Dharmapuri and Salem."

The new airport is also expected to complement Karnataka's plans for a second airport in Bengaluru, creating healthy competition and boosting economic activity in both states. For Tamil Nadu, the airport promises to uplift the economy of Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and other nearby districts.

The greenfield airport in Hosur represents Tamil Nadu's commitment to fostering industrial growth and improving connectivity in the region. By enhancing infrastructure and creating opportunities for business and tourism, this project is set to transform Hosur into a major economic and logistical hub in South India.
