The Directorate of Urban Transport is introducing e-bikes and e-cycles in 15 districts, including Kanpur. This plan will work on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, similar to how e-buses operate. The initiative aims to provide an easy and eco-friendly way for people to travel within the city, just like Ola and Uber bike services. This step is expected to improve urban transport and offer a comfortable commuting option for residents.

Improving Last-Mile Connectivity
The main goal of this initiative is to make transportation more accessible, especially for last-mile connectivity. Joint Director Jaideep Verma stated, "With this facility, common citizens will be able to get transport facility till the last point." The introduction of rental e-cycles and e-bikes will benefit daily travelers by offering an affordable and convenient mode of transport.
Planning and Infrastructure
To implement this project smoothly, the Directorate has asked the Municipal Corporation for details about routes, charging stations, and other requirements. This information will help in preparing the Request for Proposal (RFP) to finalize the project's execution. The setup of charging stations and designated parking areas will ensure that users can access the e-bikes and e-cycles easily.
The availability of these two-wheelers is also expected to reduce congestion and lessen the burden on public transport like urban buses. With better control over passenger numbers, the city's transport sector may also see an increase in revenue.
Future Developments
The Directorate is also gathering information about existing e-bike and e-cycle availability under the Smart City initiative or other schemes. Additionally, they are identifying suitable locations for charging stations and parking areas to support the new transport system.
Following the success of the PPP model with urban buses in cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Varanasi, the government hopes to replicate the same for e-bikes and e-cycles. This initiative will improve mobility while also promoting a cleaner and more sustainable mode of transport.
The introduction of e-bikes and e-cycles in 15 districts marks a major step in modernizing urban transport. With proper planning and collaboration, this project has the potential to transform how people travel within cities, offering a convenient and eco-friendly solution for daily commuting.
