The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has received a new proposal from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to connect the Yashobhumi Metro station on the Airport Express Line with the Iffco Chowk Metro station in Gurugram. The proposal, submitted on August 11, could significantly benefit daily commuters by
offering smoother travel between Gurugram, West Delhi, IGI Airport, and other parts of Delhi if approved.
Introduction of New Routes to Link Gurugram Mero Extension
One of the DMRC officials has suggested preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the route from Yashobhumi Dwarka Sector 25 to Iffco Chowk, passing through Tau Devi Lal Park in Sector 22, as this extension aims to provide direct and faster connectivity between Gurugram and New Delhi through Airport Terminal 3. It would also be helpful for passengers using the Blue Line at Sector 21 Dwarka, as the extension through Sector 23 in Gurugram would provide them with an additional travelling option.
The proposed metro line will be 11 km long, meeting the Gurugram metro extension line at Sector 23 instead of Palam Vihar, ensuring better integration with the wider network. Moreover, a senior HMRTC official said that the final decision lies with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, adding that the matter will likely be discussed at the upcoming board meeting on September 15.
DMRC even prepared a DPR in 2015 to extend the Blue Line from Sector 21 Dwarka to Iffco Chowk, but issues such as route alignment and construction methods suspended the project. In 2016, another proposal to connect Iffco Chowk to Sector 21 and extend the line to Old Gurugram seemed unlikely, and the project has remained pending since then.
