Kolkata Metro Unveils Groundbreaking Building Management System for Blue Line Stations

Kolkata Metro is introducing a new Building Management System (BMS) on all stations along the Blue Line. This system will allow the Metro authority to centrally control important station facilities such as air-conditioning on platforms, tunnel ventilation, lifts, escalators, and sump pumps. With this upgrade, many operations that were earlier

handled manually will now be monitored and managed from one place.

North-South Corridor of Kolkata Metro

Officials explained that the north-south corridor of Kolkata Metro, India's first Metro line and the fifth in Asia, was built using 1970s technology. Over the years, it has gone through several upgrades to keep up with modern standards. The introduction of the BMS is part of this ongoing effort to improve efficiency and automation across the network.

New System of Kolkata Metro

Under the new system, all electrical and mechanical equipment will be tracked remotely from the Metro Rail Bhavan's central control room. Stations will be arranged in clusters of five. Each cluster will have one designated station where the monitoring centre will be located. From there, officials will oversee the functioning of AC units, pumps, ventilation fans, and other systems for all five stations. These cluster centres will then be connected to the main central control room, allowing real-time supervision of the entire Blue Line.

The system will also manage automatic station temperatures. If the temperature rises on platforms or inside tunnels, the BMS will send instant alerts to the control room. In situations like rising tunnel heat, increasing sub-soil temperature, fire incidents, or train congestion inside tunnels, the ventilation fans will automatically switch on to maintain safety.

This upgrade aims to make station operations smoother, safer, and more energy-efficient while reducing the need for manual intervention. It represents another step toward modernising Kolkata Metro's oldest corridor.
