The journey between Delhi and Rishikesh, which currently takes about 5 to 6 hours by road, may soon become much faster, as the government is planning to extend the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) to Rishikesh, reducing travel time to around 3 hours. This proposal gained attention after

discussions between Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The idea is to expand the existing Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor further towards Uttarakhand.
Namo Bharat Train to Start from Meerut
According to the plan, the new route will start from Modipuram in Meerut and follow the NH-58 highway. Several stations are likely to be developed along the way, including Daurala, Sakauti, Khatauli, and Purkazi near the Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand border. From there, the line would extend to Roorkee and eventually reach Haridwar and Rishikesh.
Project Funding
The Uttarakhand government has requested around ₹750 crore to improve the infrastructure needed for this project. This includes installing advanced power systems and underground cables, especially in environmentally sensitive areas like the Kumbh region.
How will this Extension Help?
If approved, the project will require an investment similar to the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor. At present, the plan is still in the proposal and planning stage, and further studies and approvals are needed before construction begins. Experts believe that this extension could greatly boost tourism and economic activity in Uttarakhand. Easier and faster travel may increase demand for holiday homes, rental properties, and homestays in areas near Rishikesh and Haridwar.
Moreover, the project aims to improve connectivity between Delhi and important religious and tourist destinations, making travel quicker, smoother, and more convenient for people.
