There will be a yearly 5% increase in Namma Metro's fares from February 2026, as per the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC). This comes after the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) already hiked fares by as much as 71.43% in February 2025, making it the expensive metro
service in India, which marked the first fare increase since June 2017.
Namma Metro's Fare Hike Details
The FFC, set up for the first time in Namma Metro's history, submitted its report in December 2024, which was led by retired Justice R. Tharani along with three members. BMRCL had originally proposed a much steeper hike of 105%, which would have raised the minimum fare to ₹21 and the maximum to ₹123. However, the committee recommended a smaller 51.5% increase, keeping the minimum at ₹10 and the maximum at ₹90.
Reasons Behind Namma Metro's Annual Fare Hike
BMRCL argued that fare revisions are necessary to cover rising operations and maintenance costs and to reduce financial losses. Without regular hikes, it will lead to a net loss of ₹577 crore by 2029-30. Loan repayments in the coming years are also very high, ranging from ₹911 crore in 2025-26 to ₹1,457 crore in 2029-30, while the available cash is much lower. The committee agreed to allow automatic annual fare revisions of 5%. Though the hike will either follow a transparent cost-based formula or remain within 5%, it will be lower. For example, if a ticket of ₹10 rises by 5%, it will become ₹11, while a ₹25 ticket will rise to ₹26.
This system will remain in effect until a new FFC is formed, which may not happen for another decade. Officials believe that the annual increase will help BMRCL stay financially stable while balancing passenger affordability.
