Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway to Open: Mumbai to Nagpur in Just 8 Hours

The completion of the last 76-km segment of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway is a major achievement for Maharashtra's transport system. This expressway, covering 701 km, was launched as a key project by Devendra Fadnavis. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced that the final stretch will be open for public use by April. Once fully operational, the expressway will reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from 16 hours to just 8 hours.

Improved Connectivity and Faster Travel

The expressway is expected to improve road connectivity in Maharashtra significantly. It will create a direct and faster link between Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the Nagpur-Multimodal International Airport. The improved road network will benefit passengers, businesses, and industries by providing smoother and faster transportation.

Construction Progress and Delays

The construction of this expressway started in November 2015 and was divided into 16 phases. A total of 16 construction companies worked on different sections of the project. While some parts of the expressway were opened in December 2022 and March 2023, the completion of the final segment faced delays. These delays were caused by changes in the state government, which led to the postponement of the opening initially planned for November-December 2024.

Final Touches Before Opening

Despite the delays, the MSRDC has worked hard to ensure that the expressway is completed on time. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is also working on a connecting road, which is expected to be finished by March 10. Other remaining works, such as planting trees and installing crash barriers, are expected to be completed by mid-March.

Important Inauguration Events

The expressway, officially named the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, has seen multiple inauguration events. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 520-km stretch between Nagpur and Shirdi on December 11, 2022. Then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the next 105-km stretch from Shirdi to Bharvir on May 23, 2023. The 25-km stretch from Bharvir to Igatpuri was opened to the public on March 4, 2024, though without a formal inauguration ceremony.

The completion of the expressway is a major step towards improving Maharashtra's infrastructure. By connecting key locations, it will support economic growth and development in the state. This expressway will provide a faster, safer, and more efficient travel route for both goods and passengers, benefiting people across Maharashtra.
