Nagpur Metro's Phase-2 project, one of the city's biggest ongoing development works, is making steady progress on the ground, even though the spending so far has been relatively low. According to information obtained through an RTI query, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MahaMetro) has used only 16.8% of the approved

budget. Out of the total sanctioned amount of ₹6,708 crore, only ₹1,132.73 crore has been spent. Sources within MahaMetro explained that major expenses usually begin once work on systems, trains, and stations reaches full speed. However, officials did not comment in detail because of the ongoing model code of conduct.
Land Acquisition for Phase 2
For land acquisition, MahaMetro needs a total of 9.043 hectares for Phase 2. Out of this, 4.82 hectares, about 53%, have already been acquired. Moreover, the RTI reply shows that 3.04 hectares came from government land, while 1.78 hectares were purchased from private owners. MahaMetro has spent ₹34.84 crore on land so far.
Ongoing Construction
Construction activity is visible in many parts of the city. Span-launching work is underway on all four stretches of Phase 2, and this process involves placing large girders that form the elevated tracks, one of the most important steps in metro construction. After this stage, workers can begin deck slab building, viaduct finishing, and later move on to installing stations, tracks, and electrical systems.
Rise in Metro Revenue
The RTI data also highlights a rise in metro revenue. Nagpur Metro earned ₹20.68 crore in 2022-23, ₹35.99 crore in 2023-24, and ₹44.10 crore in 2024-25. In just the first half of 2025-26, it has already earned ₹24.49 crore. Passenger numbers have also grown, with over 10.85 crore commuters using the metro till September 30, 2025. Both the Maharashtra and the central government have contributed funds. Maharashtra has released ₹729 crore, while the central government has provided ₹675 crore so far.
Phase 2, expected to be completed by December 2027, will extend the metro towards Hingna, Transport Nagar, Butibori, and Kamptee. This expansion will improve last-mile connectivity and balance passenger load across the network.
