The Maharashtra government has approved a Rs.310.35 crore project to extend the Phase II North Corridor of the Nagpur Metro. The decision was taken by the state cabinet's infrastructure sub-committee, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The project aims to improve metro connectivity by extending the existing line from the Kanhan River to Kanhan town.

Nagpur Metro Extension
The new extension will be around 1.4 kilometres long and will include a new elevated metro station at Kanhan town. This extension is expected to make public transport more convenient for people living in Kanhan and nearby areas, while also improving connectivity with the rest of Nagpur's metro network.
According to officials, nearly 20,000 passengers are expected to benefit from the extension every day. The project is designed to provide faster, safer, and more comfortable travel for commuters. It will also reduce dependence on private vehicles, helping to ease road congestion and lower pollution levels in the region.
Nagpur Metro Phase II Project
The extension is part of the larger Nagpur Metro Phase II project, which is expanding metro services to several growing areas around the city. The proposal for the Kanhan extension was prepared by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) after studying future passenger demand and the need for better transport facilities in the northern part of Nagpur district.
Nagpur Metro Phase II Project Inclusion
The project will also include the construction of an elevated viaduct and supporting infrastructure to ensure smooth metro operations. Once completed, the new section will improve access to educational institutions, residential areas, and commercial centres in and around Kanhan.
The approval reflects the Maharashtra government's continued focus on expanding urban transport infrastructure. The Nagpur Metro expansion is expected to support the city's future growth by providing an efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly public transport system. Along with improving connectivity, the project is likely to encourage economic development and make daily travel easier for thousands of residents in the Nagpur region.
