The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to open a new signal-free connector that will link the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) directly with the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). This new route aims to reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion for daily commuters. The 180-meter-long connector is expected to open within a couple of days, saving up to 15 minutes for travelers, according to a senior MMRDA official.
The new connector, which runs from the SEBI Building to Avenue-5 below the BKC Connector Road and extends to Avenue-3 near We-Work, is 850 meters in total length. Although the distance remains the same, the absence of signals along the route ensures faster and smoother travel. A senior official noted that this development is crucial for addressing the traffic jams that occur during peak hours when vehicles flood the BKC area.
Initially opened on November 10, 2019, the elevated connector linking BKC's 'G Block' and EEH aimed to improve accessibility. However, heavy usage during rush hours caused significant delays on BKC's internal roads and avenues. This prompted MMRDA to design a more efficient route to handle the growing traffic demand.
Promoting Smoother Traffic Flow
The new link is part of MMRDA's broader strategy to distribute traffic across multiple routes and promote efficient dispersal. By providing alternative paths to the BKC Connector and EEH, the authority aims to ease the pressure on BKC's internal roads. Vehicles heading towards G-Block and key locations like MCA, Consulate, and MTNL are expected to benefit significantly.
The three alternative routes connected by this new signal-free road are designed to reduce congestion while maintaining the shortest travel time. This improvement is expected to provide a seamless commuting experience for thousands of daily travelers who rely on this busy corridor.
