Excitement filled the air as Mumbaikars celebrated the opening of the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road (MCR). Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the new stretch by driving a 94-year-old vintage Rolls Royce. The second phase of the Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road, a 6.25 km tunnel from Haji Ali to Amarsons, is now open and will extend to Worli by July.
Chief Minister Shinde announced, "With advanced construction technology, travel time is reduced from 40-50 minutes to just 8 minutes." The new coastal road links Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, spanning 10.8 kilometers and featuring a 2-kilometer tunnel between Priyadarshini Park and Marine Drive.
The first phase of the coastal road was inaugurated on March 11 by CM Shinde, Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar. Today, scores of vehicles were seen entering the south-north arm of the MCR at Marine Lines. Motorists were pleasantly surprised to complete the commute to the Haji Ali junction in just 8 minutes, compared to the nearly one hour it took previously.
The new stretch of the coastal road is equipped with modern amenities and is expected to significantly decongest traffic from south Mumbai to the northern parts of the city. Chief Minister Shinde emphasized that this development would greatly benefit commuters, making travel much faster and more convenient.
