Mumbai's Historic Carnac Bridge Ready To Serve Commuters Again

After three long years, Mumbai’s iconic Carnac Bridge is finally ready to reopen. This 154-year-old bridge, which connects Masjid and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), has been closed for demolition and rebuilding. Now, the bridge is expected to start serving people again next week. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), all the structural work has been completed, and load testing was successfully done from June 13 to June 15.

The final step before the bridge can open is getting the last few approvals. The traffic police and the Railways still need to give their No Objection Certificates (NOCs), but these are expected soon. Once that happens, the bridge will be open for vehicles and commuters, easing travel in the busy area.

More Lanes, Smoother Traffic

The new Carnac bridge is wider and better than before. Unlike the old bridge, which had only two lanes, the new one has four vehicular lanes. This upgrade is expected to reduce traffic jams in South Mumbai, especially along the always-busy P D'Mello Road.

The bridge will also help vehicles move better from east to west in the city. It connects important roads like the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, giving smoother and quicker travel options across the city. This is great news for the many daily commuters who use this route.

Why the Delay?

Even though the bridge was proposed in 2016, actual demolition work didn’t begin until 2022. This delay happened because there were many obstacles in the way. Things like a police outpost, an electricity substation, a small temple, and a gym had to be removed before construction could move ahead. However, the hard work has now paid off. The new bridge is not just stronger and wider, but it also includes modern features like clear traffic signs and improved lighting. These upgrades will make the bridge safer and easier to use, both during the day and at night.

For many Mumbaikars, the reopening of the Carnac bridge is more than just a convenience—it’s a big relief. With better traffic flow and smoother connectivity, especially in the southern part of the city, the new bridge promises to make daily travel much easier.
