Mumbai's Gokhale Bridge Reopens Fully After 5 Years, Eases Andheri Traffic Before Monsoon

Nearly five years after a tragic accident led to its closure, the Gokhale Bridge in Mumbai's Andheri is now fully open to the public. The bridge, which connects Andheri East and West, was shut down following a major collapse in July 2018. That incident caused loss of lives and serious damage to the structure, leading to years of inconvenience for residents.

Mumbai Gokhale Bridge Reopens Fully

With the start of the monsoon season just around the corner, the complete reopening of the bridge comes as a big relief for commuters who had been struggling with limited road options and heavy traffic.

A Major Step Forward for Andheri

The bridge's full restoration was officially marked with a ceremony attended by Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar. Local MLA Ameet Satam, who played a major role in pushing the project forward, was also present, along with MP Ravindra Waikar and Andheri East MLA Murji Patel. Their presence showed how important this bridge is to the community.

The bridge had been partially reopened in 2019, but due to the pandemic, traffic was low and fewer people were affected by the limited access. However, when life began returning to normal, damage caused by corrosion led to a complete shutdown from November 2022 to February 2024.

A Big Relief for Commuters

For local residents, the bridge's closure caused major traffic problems. The Andheri subway was the only other option, and it often became flooded during the rains, making it hard to travel. With the bridge now fully functional, smoother traffic and better connectivity between East and West Andheri are expected.

Karan Jotwani from the Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association (LOCA) said that the reopening will ease pressure on the subway. Another resident, Abhijeet Sonone, shared that even having the bridge partially open was better than it being completely shut, as it affected daily commutes.

Focus on Quality and Timely Completion

Some people had concerns about the quality of the road surface on the bridge. Local MLA Ameet Satam responded to these by assuring everyone that the mastic asphalt used would settle properly over time, ensuring both strength and safety.

Municipal official Abhijit Bangar also shared that the project was completed ahead of the monsoon and within the target date of May 15. This shows the administration's effort to meet deadlines and address people's needs quickly.

As the Gokhale Bridge is now open again, it stands as a symbol of recovery and progress for the Andheri area. The timing is perfect, as it will help thousands of people travel more easily during the rainy season and bring back normal life to the community.
