Mumbai is all set to witness a major milestone in its transportation history with the launch of its first underground metro line, known as the Aqua Line. Investment and Management
The Aqua Line project, overseen by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), has seen an investment of over Rs 37,000 crores. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will manage the operations and maintenance of the Aqua Line, ensuring passenger safety and efficient service. The contract with DMRC is set for ten years.
Prime Minister's Vision
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged to make life easier for Mumbaikars, and the Aqua Line is a step towards fulfilling that promise. Last month, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) successfully completed the trials of the rolling stock for the underground Mumbai Metro Line 3, bringing the project closer to its launch.
Funding and Costs
The Metro Line 3 project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The total project cost, revised to Rs 37,276 crore, includes a JICA loan of Rs 21,280 crore. This financial support has been crucial in bringing the Aqua Line to fruition.
Unique Features of Mumbai's Aqua Line

Route and Stations
The Aqua Line stretches 33.5 km, running from Colaba in the south to SEEPZ in the north. This extensive route covers prominent areas such as Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST, and Worli. There are 27 stations along this route, with 26 of them being underground. Some of the key stations include Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Mumbai Central, and Sahar Road International Airport.
Operating Hours and Speed
The trains on the Aqua Line will run from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm, offering frequent services. With speeds of up to 90 km/h, the metro will significantly reduce travel time compared to road journeys, making daily commutes faster and more efficient.
