Mumbai's first fully underground metro line will soon be open for the public, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the final 10.99-km stretch between Acharya Atre Chowk and Cuffe Parade on Wednesday, 8 October, during his two-day visit to the city. The 33.5-km Aqua Line (Metro Line 3) runs underground

from Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai to Aarey in Goregaon. The sections between Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk are already running. With this last section, the entire corridor will be operational.
Final Phase & Underground Metro Stations
This final phase adds 11 new underground stations, improving access to South Mumbai's heritage zones, government offices, and business areas, built at a cost of ₹12,195 crore, connecting major railway stations like Mumbai CSMT, Mumbai Central, and Churchgate, allowing smoother travel to key hubs such as Fort, Nariman Point, and Kalbadevi. The full project, costing over ₹37,270 crore, will greatly ease commuting for Mumbaikars.
Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 Connects to Airport
According to officials, Metro Line 3 will reduce suburban train loads by 15%, save 3.54 lakh litres of fuel daily, and reduce 6.65 lakh vehicle trips, helping lower pollution and congestion. Once operational, people can travel from Cuffe Parade to Aarey in about an hour instead of the current 1 to 2 hours. The line has 27 stations, connects to the airport, and is expected to serve 13 lakh passengers daily.
Inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport
During his visit on Wednesday, PM Modi will also inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore. The airport, India's largest Greenfield project, will handle nine crore passengers a year and will be the first in the country to offer a water taxi connection. On October 9, PM Modi will also host UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in Mumbai.
