The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is set to launch electric ferry services between Mumbai and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) in January 2025. These ferries promise to offer a faster, eco-friendly, and more comfortable travel option for passengers commuting between the two locations.

The electric ferries will significantly cut travel time, reducing the journey to just 30-40 minutes, saving up to 20 minutes compared to current options. To ensure passenger comfort, the ferries will feature air-conditioned seating, making the commute not only faster but also more enjoyable.
Environment-Friendly Travel
This initiative aligns with the "Harit Sagar" or "Green Port" plan introduced by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPS&W). It focuses on promoting sustainable port operations and reducing environmental impacts. With a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2047 and increase renewable energy usage at ports by 60%, the electric ferries represent a significant step toward cleaner transportation.
Innovative Features of the Electric Ferries
The ferries are constructed from fibre-reinforced polymer material and are 12 meters long. They can travel at a maximum speed of 12 knots and accommodate 20 to 24 passengers per trip. The seamless travel experience is enhanced by an easy-to-use online ticketing system and smooth check-in options.
Routes and Operations
The ferries will operate from the Gateway of India to JNP during the regular season and from Bhaucha Dhakka to JNP during the foul season. These routes are expected to make commuting hassle-free for travelers and improve the connectivity between Mumbai and the port.
This initiative by JNPA aims to not only improve the commuting experience but also set a benchmark in sustainable transport. The pollution-free, quiet, and efficient electric ferries represent a modern solution to urban transportation challenges.
Passengers can look forward to a cleaner, quicker, and more comfortable journey starting in January 2025. This project highlights India's commitment to sustainable development and innovative transportation solutions.
