The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has approved the opening of Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 9. This phase covers a 4.5-km stretch between Dahisar and Kashigaon. Officials said there are plans to open this line along with Phase 1 of Metro Line 2B on the same day, likely in the first week of February.

Mumbai's Four Metro Routes
Currently, Mumbai has four Metro routes in service. These include Line 2A and Line 7, which run on the Dahisar-Gundavali-Andheri West corridor; Line 1 connecting Versova, Andheri, and Ghatkopar; and Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, which runs between Aarey JVLR and Cuffe Parade. With the proposed joint launch of Line 9 and Line 2B, two more Metro links will be added to the city's growing Metro network.
Mumbai Metro Phase I Line 2B
Officials said Phase 1 of Metro Line 2B is 5.3 km long and runs between Diamond Garden and Mandale. This stretch has already received safety approval from the CMRS, which is an important legal requirement before beginning passenger services. Once this phase of Line 2B becomes operational, it will provide the first Metro connection for people living in the eastern suburbs, including Chembur. Currently, Chembur is mainly connected to the island city through the Monorail.
Safety Clearance of Metro Line 9
The safety clearance for Phase 1 of Metro Line 9 has also cleared the way for its launch. Line 9 is an important route in the north-western part of Mumbai. It is planned to connect Dahisar East with Mira-Bhayander through Kashigaon and Mira Road. This line will also act as a feeder to Metro Line 7, which is already running between Dahisar East and Gundavali in Andheri East.
Officials added that the Diamond Garden-Mandale section was earlier expected to open sooner. However, technical issues and later the civic code of conduct caused delays in the project timeline.
