Mumbai is set to witness a major infrastructure milestone as the newly rebuilt Carnac Bridge is expected to reopen for vehicles in June. This bridge, which connects Masjid Bunder railway station to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), was demolished in 2022 due to safety concerns. After years of delays and challenges, the bridge is finally ready, promising to ease congestion in one of Mumbai's busiest areas.
A Bridge with Historical Significance
The Carnac Bridge was originally built in the 19th century and served as an important east-west link in Mumbai. It connected the city's major roads, including P'D Mello Road, and played a crucial role in daily commuting. However, after standing for 154 years, a structural audit declared the bridge unsafe, leading to its demolition in 2022. It was one of the first railway-overhead structures in Mumbai to be taken down due to safety reasons.
Challenges in Reconstruction
The process of rebuilding the bridge was not easy. The initial tenders were issued in 2016, but the demolition itself took six years to complete. Several hurdles slowed down the progress, including the removal of encroachments and the relocation of essential facilities like a police station, an electric substation, a temple, and a gymnasium. These challenges delayed the start of construction by nearly five years after work orders were issued.
Features of the New Carnac Bridge
The new Carnac Bridge has been designed with a steel superstructure, making it stronger and more durable. It will be 70 meters long and 9.5 meters wide, featuring four lanes-double the capacity of the old bridge. The upgraded structure will also include modern facilities such as better lighting and updated signage, improving the commuting experience for thousands of daily travelers.
Efforts to Meet Deadlines
Authorities have been working hard to ensure the bridge is completed before the monsoon season. The Indian Express reported that officials had accelerated construction last year to prevent further delays. According to Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), the focus was on opening the entire bridge at once rather than in phases. The steel girder was successfully launched in February, followed by trial runs earlier this week. With the bridge's pillars completed, efforts are now directed toward finalizing the carriageway.
The reconstruction of the Carnac Bridge is estimated to cost Rs 70 crore, but the benefits it brings to Mumbai's traffic network are invaluable. By doubling capacity and improving connectivity, the bridge is expected to reduce congestion in South Mumbai, providing a smoother and safer transit experience.
