Mumbai Rains: Schools & Colleges Closure Update for August 19 as IMD Issues Red Alert

On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, all schools and colleges in Mumbai and nearby regions will remain closed following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rainfall.

Mumbai Rains Schools amp amp Colleges Closure Update for August 19 as IMD Issues Red Alert

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the decision on social media, highlighting the severe weather warnings for both Mumbai city and its suburbs.

According to the IMD forecast, very heavy rainfall is expected across several states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka on the same day. Meanwhile, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Kerala have been placed under an orange alert. The IMD further stated that "extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Konkan & Goa and the Ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra on August 19, as well as parts of Gujarat on August 19 and 20."

Effects of Heavy Rainfall

Mumbai has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall for the past four days. On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted "heavy to very heavy rain at multiple locations, with extremely heavy showers at isolated spots."

The downpour on Monday led to waterlogging in several parts of the city, causing traffic disruptions in low-lying areas such as Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex.

Train services were also affected, with local trains on the Harbour Line running about 10 minutes late due to water accumulation on the tracks in certain low-lying zones. However, railway officials clarified that there were no major service interruptions. On the Central Railway line, movement was impacted by waterlogged tracks and issues with track-changing points between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations.

Safety Precautions

To ensure public safety, the BMC has declared a holiday for all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai and its suburbs. This decision has been taken in light of the severe weather forecast.

Authorities are actively implementing measures to mitigate the impact of the heavy rainfall, while urging residents to stay informed about weather updates and follow necessary precautions during this period.
