To improve road connectivity in Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started the construction of a new elevated road between Ghatkopar and Thane. This road will allow people to travel without any traffic signals and is expected to cut travel time to just 30-35 minutes. The elevated corridor will run from Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar in Thane, covering a distance of 12.955 kilometers.

A Major Boost to Mumbai's Infrastructure
The new elevated road is being built by Navayuga Engineering at a cost of Rs 2,682 crore. It will be 40 metres wide and will have three lanes on each side. This road aims to ease the heavy traffic that people face every day, especially along the busy Eastern Express Highway. It will also improve overall travel between South Mumbai and Thane.
Link with Eastern Freeway for Better Traffic Flow
This new elevated road will be connected to the existing 16.8-kilometre-long Eastern Freeway. The freeway starts at PD Mello Road near CSMT and ends at Chedda Nagar. While it has helped reduce traffic from South Mumbai, there are still delays for people traveling to Thane, especially beyond Mankhurd. The new road will solve this issue by offering a smoother and faster route.
Construction Work Already Started
The construction work has already begun. Excavation and pillar-building are in progress, and safety barricades have been placed along the route. Since the road is being built directly over the Eastern Express Highway, it is a big challenge, but work is moving ahead carefully to ensure public safety.
Quick Land Acquisition is a Key Achievement
One of the early successes of the project is the fast land acquisition process. This is often a problem for such large projects, but the MMRDA has completed this step quickly with the help of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). Around 1,694 slum units from Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar were relocated. What makes this unique is that MMRDA itself is handling the redevelopment of this slum area, which is a first.
The new elevated road between Ghatkopar and Thane is expected to change the way people travel in Mumbai. With its direct, signal-free route and smooth connection to the Eastern Freeway, it will help thousands of daily commuters. As the project moves forward, it stands as an important improvement in Mumbai's growing road network.
