Mumbai on Cyclone Tej Alert: IMD Issued a Warning for Next 2 Days

Mumbai on Cyclone Alert: Possible Cyclonic Storm May Impact Weather in Maharashtra

Mumbai is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a warning regarding potential weather changes in the Maharashtra city due to a developing cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea. While no cyclone currently exists in the Arabian Sea, weather experts are closely monitoring a low-pressure area that could potentially evolve into a cyclone within the next few days. If Cyclone Tej materializes, it is expected to influence the weather in Mumbai, Pune, and the South Konkan regions.

Mumbai on Cyclone Tej Alert

Over the past three to four days, a blanket of mist has enveloped Mumbai, leading to the city's air quality falling within the 'moderate' category on the Air Quality Index (AQI). The phenomenon has been consistently observed by officials.

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), managed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Mumbai's PM10 level stood at 143 at 6 pm on Wednesday, in contrast to Delhi's 122. This scenario is a result of the presence of moisture and anti-cyclonic wind circulation that prevents the wind from ascending. An anti-cyclone positioned right above Mumbai traps moisture in the air, explained India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Sushma Nair.

The IMD's weather update suggests the likelihood of a low-pressure area forming over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea within the next 48 hours. This low-pressure area carries the potential to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the central Arabian Sea around October 21. If a tropical storm does emerge in the Indian seas, it will be named "Tej" in adherence to the cyclone-naming formula in the Indian Ocean region.

Mumbai registered a maximum temperature of 36.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, marking the highest October temperature this year. The Santacruz observatory of the IMD, responsible for monitoring weather parameters in Mumbai's suburbs, recorded this temperature.

In contrast, the Colaba observatory, which tracks meteorological data for the island city, documented a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius. As a result of the impending cyclonic disturbance, night temperatures in Mumbai and throughout the state are expected to decrease to a cooler 22-23 degrees Celsius.

Pune, a neighboring city, will also witness temperature drops, with forecasts indicating a range of 16-17 degrees Celsius around October 22-25. In the South Konkan region, rainfall may occur due to the approaching cyclone. Residents are advised to stay updated on the developing weather situation and to take necessary precautions.

Mumbai remains vigilant and prepared as it faces the potential impact of Cyclone Tej, while experts continue to closely monitor the situation and provide regular updates.
