A new water taxi service is being planned to connect South Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The service will start from the Radio Club jetty in Colaba and reduce the current travel time of 60 to 75 minutes (by road) to just around 40 minutes. This move is part of a larger effort to offer faster and greener travel options for passengers heading to or from the new airport.

Improving Connectivity and Saving Time
This new water taxi plan is designed to make travel easier between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. At present, people use the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link to drive between the two places, which can take over an hour. The water taxi will offer a quicker way to reach the airport, saving both time and fuel.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, during a review meeting in April 2025, stressed the importance of providing different travel options such as road, rail, metro, and water transport to make the airport more accessible. The use of electric water taxis also shows the state's focus on greener and cleaner travel.
Plan and Preparation
At a recent meeting, CIDCO managing director Vijay Singhal presented the water taxi proposal to Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitesh Rane. The minister asked officials to prepare formal plans for building the jetty and terminal and to start the approval process with airport authorities. The Maharashtra Maritime Board will help build the jetty near the airport to allow easy boat access.
The electric vessels will not only reduce travel time but also lower pollution. The project is part of a larger plan to grow water-based transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Connecting with Other Travel Options
One of the best features of this project is how it connects with other forms of transport. The water taxi service will be linked to buses, trains, and metro lines. This will make it easy for passengers to switch from one mode of transport to another. A new jetty and terminal will be built near the airport to support this.
This improved access is expected to help the tourism industry by bringing in more visitors. Local hotels, restaurants, and travel services are likely to see a boost.
This service also follows global trends in using waterways and electric transport to fight pollution and ease traffic. The project can become a model for other cities in India. By offering faster and eco-friendly travel, this water taxi will change how people reach the Navi Mumbai airport and promote a more sustainable future.
