A new six-lane expressway in Mumbai is set to make travel faster and easier. Approved by the Union Cabinet, this expressway will cover 29 kilometers and connect Pagote in the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) area to Chouk. It will link the old Mumbai-Pune highway and Karjat road, improving access between the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66). With an investment of over Rs 4,500 crore, this project aims to enhance connectivity and improve the movement of goods and passengers in the region.

Expressway Route and Connectivity
This expressway will provide a direct link between JNPA and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The project is a part of the PM GatiShakti national master plan, which aims to improve connectivity in major economic zones. The expressway will be built under a build, operate, and transfer model, meaning a private company will construct and maintain it before handing it over to the government.
Currently, the roads connecting JNPA to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway are heavily congested. Vehicles often take two to three hours to travel due to high traffic. Areas like Palaspe Phata, D-Point, Kalamboli Junction, and Panvel see nearly 180,000 vehicles daily. The new expressway will provide a smoother and faster route, reducing traffic delays.
Tunnels Through the Sahayadri Mountains
To further improve travel efficiency, the expressway will include two tunnels through the Sahayadri mountains. These tunnels will help vehicles avoid steep and winding ghat roads, making travel safer and faster, especially for commercial and heavy vehicles. The tunnels will also help reduce road accidents in the region.
Benefits for Trade and Transportation
JNPA handles a large amount of container traffic daily, and with the opening of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, transportation demands are expected to increase. This expressway will make freight movement easier and more efficient. It will allow goods to be transported faster, benefiting businesses and boosting trade.
By reducing travel time and improving road safety, the expressway will contribute to the economic growth of Mumbai and Pune. It will make travel more comfortable for passengers and improve logistics for businesses.
The new six-lane expressway is a major infrastructure project that will improve transportation in the Mumbai region. By providing better connectivity, reducing congestion, and ensuring faster movement of goods, it will have a positive impact on trade and travel. As container volumes rise and the Navi Mumbai International Airport becomes operational, this expressway will play a crucial role in strengthening Mumbai's transportation network.
