Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Update: Next 76-km Section to Open By March; Check Route

The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is getting closer to completion, bringing better travel options for passengers. The new section from Igatpuri to Amane, covering 76 km, will soon be open to the public. This stretch will be inaugurated in March by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, according to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Officials have confirmed that the final lane markings and painting will be done between February 25 and 27, making the road ready for travelers.

Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Update

Step-by-Step Opening of the Expressway

The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, officially known as the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, has been opening in phases since December 2022. The first 520 km from Nagpur to Shirdi was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Later, in May 2023, a 105-km section from Shirdi to Bharvir was opened by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In March 2024, another 25-km stretch from Bharvir to Igatpuri was made available for motorists. Now, with the upcoming launch of the Bhiwandi extension, the expressway is set to make travel between Mumbai and Nagpur even smoother.

A Project Designed for Speed and Safety

The construction of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway began in February 2019 after being announced in 2015. It has been built in 16 different sections, with a toll collection system planned for 40 years. The expressway is designed for speeds up to 150 kmph, making travel faster. At the same time, modern features like wildlife underpasses, pedestrian crossings, and flyovers ensure safety for both drivers and animals.

Facilities for a Comfortable Journey

To make travel more convenient, the MSRDC is setting up ten public service areas along the expressway. These stops will have petrol pumps, food stalls, and resting spaces for travelers. These additions will make long trips more comfortable and accessible for passengers.

Currently, the expressway is operational from Igatpuri near Nashik to Nagpur, covering 625 km. The Igatpuri-Amane stretch was supposed to open in November or December 2024, but delays in government formation and decision-making postponed the launch. The MSRDC decided to finish all pending work before opening the entire section at once.

At Amane, the expressway connects to the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, which will link the Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Gujarat. For now, a temporary arrangement allows vehicles to move between the Mumbai-Nashik Highway and the Samruddhi Expressway.

With the upcoming opening of the Bhiwandi extension, the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is set to provide a seamless route for travelers. It will save time, reduce congestion, and boost economic growth by making it easier to transport goods and people across the region. This major development is expected to improve travel experiences for thousands of commuters.
