Mumbai Metro One has introduced a new digital metro pass system that allows commuters to buy, store and use their travel passes through WhatsApp. The service, launched on August 16, is being described as India's first metro pass system to operate through WhatsApp, available for passengers travelling on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro corridor.

Mumbai Metro's New Digital Pass
The new facility is to make daily travel easier and reduce passengers' need to depend on physical tickets or visit ticket counters. Commuters can purchase their metro passes directly through WhatsApp and keep the digital pass on their mobile phones. The pass can also be added to Google Wallet and Apple Wallet, making it easier to access while travelling.
Mumbai Metro One's Upgrade
The new system builds on Mumbai Metro One's existing WhatsApp-based ticketing service, which was introduced in 2022. The earlier facility allowed passengers to purchase QR-based tickets for individual journeys through WhatsApp. With the latest upgrade, the service has now been extended to metro passes as well. The digital system is expected to be particularly useful for regular commuters who travel frequently on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar route. Instead of purchasing a physical pass, passengers can complete the process digitally and carry the pass on their smartphones.
The move is part of Mumbai Metro One's efforts to use technology to make public transport more convenient, as digital ticketing can help save passengers time, simplify the ticket-buying process and reduce the need for paper-based travel documents.
