Delhi-Bihar Special Buses: Delhi Government is Planning to Introduce Direct Bus Service before Diwali & Chhath

The Delhi government is planning to introduce direct bus services between Delhi and Bihar before Diwali and Chhath Puja in 2026. The Transport Department has identified 18 possible interstate routes, with two to three routes expected to become operational in the first phase.

The proposed services aim to provide additional travel options for thousands of passengers travelling from Delhi to Bihar during the festive season. Currently, private buses operate between the two regions, but there is no government-run bus service connecting Delhi and Bihar.

In August 2026, the Delhi Transport Department prepared a draft reciprocal transport agreement between Delhi and Bihar and invited suggestions before finalising it. The proposed routes connect Delhi with major Bihar cities, including Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur and Purnia. As the buses will pass through Uttar Pradesh, some routes will also cover cities such as Noida, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gorakhpur. The government is also planning separate bus connectivity to eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Initially, the government had considered deploying more than 50 buses for Bihar around Chhath Puja. However, the current plan is to introduce services on two to three routes before gradually expanding to other destinations. Private bus operators may also be engaged under the proposed agreement.

The reciprocal transport agreement is expected to remain valid for 10 years. Under its conditions, diesel buses must comply with BS-VI or newer emission standards, while CNG and electric buses will also be permitted. All buses must meet safety requirements, including vehicle-tracking systems and emergency buttons.

A committee is currently reviewing the proposed routes, fares, and other operational details. The final decision on the routes and ticket prices will be taken after the committee submits its report. The government aims to begin the services before Diwali and Chhath Puja, subject to the completion of the necessary procedures.
