In Mumbai, an illegal borewell drilling by a private water supplier caused minor damage to an underground Metro tunnel earlier this month. It occurred in South Mumbai near Metro Cinema and affected the Aqua Line tunnel, which is the city's only fully underground Metro route.

Regular Train Operations
According to officials, the drilling was conducted without proper permission and led to a small hole in the tunnel. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation filed a police complaint against the private water supplier for this damage. Despite the sudden incident, metro services have not been affected, and trains are running normally.
Construction Work Requires Official Approval
The MMRC explained that any construction or digging work within 50 metres of the Metro Line-3 area requires official approval. This rule is made to prevent accidents and protect important infrastructure. Moreover, authorities have urged people and agencies to follow these rules carefully and obtain proper permissions before starting any such work.
Although the MMRC did not share complete details about the timing, contractor, or the full extent of the damage, a senior police officer confirmed that the incident took place on March 5. The drilling caused a small breach on one side of the tunnel. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on March 13 at Azad Maidan police station against Rambabu Raay, who owns Chandrama Water Supply, under relevant legal sections.
Mumbai Metro Aqua Line
The Aqua Line is a 33.5-kilometre-long Metro corridor that connects Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai to Aarey JVLR in the western suburbs, and it is India's only completely underground Metro line, making safety and strict regulation very important.
