Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday inaugurated an Arpan Kendra, a donation centre for old clothes, at Punjabi Bagh West Metro Station. The initiative aims to promote sustainable waste management, encourage the reuse of old clothes, and support a circular economy in the national capital.
Delhi Metro's New Initiative
According to the Chief Minister's Office, 10 Arpan Kendras will be set up at major Delhi Metro stations. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation (DMLWO). The centres will collect old clothes that can be reused, recycled or upcycled rather than thrown away.
Delhi Metro Stations to Get Arpan Kendras
In the first phase of the project, Arpan Kendras have been opened at five metro stations: Shalimar Bagh, Punjabi Bagh West, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, Shahdara and Rohini West. More centres are expected to be launched at other metro stations in the coming months.
How will Delhi Metro's Initiative to Benefit People?
The initiative encourages people to donate clothes they no longer use. These clothes will be sorted and either reused by those in need, recycled into new materials, or upcycled into useful products. The project is expected to reduce textile waste while promoting responsible disposal and reuse of clothing.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that building a 'Viksit Delhi' (Developed Delhi) is not only about improving roads, bridges and metro infrastructure. She said it also requires responsible citizens who value resources and work together to protect the environment.
The Chief Minister added that a truly developed society is one where waste is treated as a valuable resource rather than discarded. She stressed that development should go hand in hand with environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
The Arpan Kendra initiative is expected to encourage more people to adopt eco-friendly habits, reduce waste, and contribute towards a cleaner and greener Delhi. It also supports the idea of a circular economy, where products are reused and recycled to minimise environmental impact while benefiting the community.
