The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the construction of a foot over bridge (FOB) that will directly connect a station on Mumbai Metro Line 4 with the Godrej commercial campus in Vikhroli. The move is part of MMRDA's plan to improve last-mile connectivity and make Metro travel more convenient for commuters.
Mumbai Metro's New Projects to Boost Last-Mile Connectivity
The new bridge will allow employees, visitors, and other passengers to walk directly from the Metro station to the Godrej campus without crossing the busy LBS Road. This is expected to improve pedestrian safety, reduce travel time, and make the daily commute easier.
This is the second project approved under MMRDA's direct Metro connectivity policy. The first approval was given for a direct link between Metro Line 7 and Oberoi's SkyCity Mall in Borivali.
Under the policy, commercial and residential developers seeking direct access to Metro stations must pay a one-time, non-refundable development fee. They are also responsible for the complete cost of designing and building the foot over bridge. In addition, they must pay six per cent of the construction cost to MMRDA for supervision and to ensure that all engineering and safety standards are met.
For the Vikhroli project, Godrej & Boyce has paid a development fee of Rs 10 crore and will fully fund the bridge's construction.
MMRDA is also reviewing similar proposals from other organisations, including Bharat Diamond Bourse, for a direct connection to Metro Line 2B. The authority said the Vikhroli project could benefit nearly 40,000 commuters every day by reducing crowding around the station and encouraging more people to use the Metro.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the policy will improve last-mile connectivity, increase Metro ridership and generate additional non-fare revenue to support the long-term growth and maintenance of Mumbai's Metro network. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee also said the initiative will improve commuter convenience, enhance safety and help build a financially sustainable public transport system for the city.
