Mumbai Metro Line Phase I is Moving Towards the Inspection Stage, Expansion of Mumbai Metro

Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 5 is steadily moving towards the important Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspection stage, which is required before the metro can begin operations. At the same time, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has expanded the project, making it one of the largest metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The metro route was earlier planned as a 22.38-km corridor, but it has now been extended through Metro Line 5A by another 11.8 km. With this extension, the total length of the project has increased to 34.2 km, covering Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar. The total project cost has now reached Rs 18,130 crore.

Mumbai Metro's New Line Opening

Officials said the first phase between Thane and Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi is expected to open by the end of this year. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the metro line will greatly improve travel for people living in Bhiwandi and the Kalyan-Dombivli area, which are important industrial and residential hubs.
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde said the corridor will become a major transport link for the eastern Mumbai Metropolitan Region by connecting residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee said construction work for Phase 1 is at an advanced stage, and preparations for the CMRS inspection are in progress. He added that once operational, the metro will reduce travel time and support the "Mumbai in Minutes" vision.

Mumbai Metro Phase 1 & 2

Phase 1 will run for 11.9 km from Thane to Dhamankar Naka with six stations. Phase 2 will extend the route further to Durgadi, while Metro Line 5A will connect Durgadi to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar through elevated stations.

The corridor will also connect with other metro lines, suburban railway stations, and major highways, improving last-mile connectivity. According to MMRDA, the project is expected to cut travel time by 40-50%, reduce traffic congestion, and support economic growth while lowering carbon emissions.
