After facing several years of delay, a new deadline has finally been announced for the much-awaited Metro Line 5, known as the Orange Line in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which has often been criticised for its slow progress. However, officials state that the first phase of the route, connecting Thane

and Bhiwandi, is likely to start operations by January 2027.
Mumbai Metro's Orange Line Progress
According to reports, local MLA Mahesh Choughule shared a positive update about the project's progress. He expressed confidence that most of the construction work is nearing completion, and technical aspects of the metro line are expected to be finished by December 2026. This timeline gives hope that the long-pending project may finally be ready for public use soon.
Mumbai Metro Services to Begin Soon
An official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) also stated that if everything goes according to plan, metro services could begin for passengers by January 2027. These updates came after a joint inspection carried out on Thursday, which involved officials from the Bhiwandi municipal corporation, MMRDA, and metro authorities. Earlier on the same day, Mayor Narayan Chaudhary held an important meeting to review the progress of metro-related infrastructure. Moreover, officials visited the construction sites between Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka, where work is still ongoing.
The Metro Line 5 project is being developed in three phases, with a total estimated cost of around ₹3,771 crore. Once completed, it is expected to improve connectivity and make travel easier for people living in Thane and Bhiwandi.
