Mumbai's transport system is set to improve with the new extension of Metro Line 3 to Worli Naka in March. This underground metro line will help reduce road congestion and provide a comfortable alternative to overcrowded local trains. The fare for this metro journey will range between Rs 10 and Rs 60, making it an affordable and convenient option for daily commuters.

Connecting Key Areas in Mumbai
Metro Line 3 was first launched in October last year, running between Aarey and BKC. Now, with the new extension, the metro will cover a 22-km stretch from Aarey to Worli Naka. The newly added segment will connect Acharya Atre Chowk station in Worli to important areas such as Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Worli. This will provide better connectivity between commercial hubs and reduce travel time for thousands of passengers.
Commuters Welcome the New Metro Extension
For many Mumbaikars, this metro expansion brings much-needed relief. Priya Rane, a marketing professional who often faces heavy traffic on Dr Annie Besant Road, is excited about the metro's convenience. "Soon, for just Rs 60, I will be able to travel from Worli to Seepz. I never thought this would be possible," she said.
Similarly, Akshat Chheda, a resident of Dadar, is happy about avoiding expensive cabs and crowded local trains. "The metro will be near my home and take me to my destinations in minutes," he shared.
Although there are some challenges, such as the distance between Dadar Metro and Dadar railway stations, the metro's direct access to major business centers is expected to attract many passengers.
Growing Ridership and Metro's Popularity
The first phase of Metro Line 3, which began operating on October 5 last year, carries around 25,000 passengers daily. While this number is lower than expected, officials believe the new extension will bring in more commuters, especially from South Mumbai's busy areas. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) expects a sharp rise in metro usage once the Worli Naka extension is open.
Overcoming Engineering Challenges
The construction of this metro line faced many engineering challenges, especially while tunneling under the Mithi River. SK Gupta, project director at MMRC, explained, "We used special methods to complete the tunnels under weak ground conditions and a water body above. Advanced tunnel boring machines and hydrophilic gaskets were used to keep the tunnels watertight."
The project also involved building crossovers at Acharya Atre Chowk and CSMT to improve train operations. "Acharya Atre Chowk station is located at a busy traffic junction, and we had to support several large utilities with steel structures during construction," Gupta added.
The extension of Metro Line 3 to Worli Naka is a major step in improving Mumbai's transport system. With reduced travel time, better connectivity, and a comfortable ride, the metro is expected to become a popular choice for daily commuters. This development marks a new milestone in the city's journey towards a more efficient and modern transport network.
