Today is a big day for Mumbai's public transport system. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate Phase 2A of Mumbai Metro Line 3, also called the Aqua Line. The event will take place at the BKC metro station at 12:30 pm. This new development will improve travel within the city and make commuting easier for Mumbaikars.

Passenger services from Saturday morning
After the inauguration, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) announced that passenger services will begin from Saturday at 6:00 am. This marks the start of a new chapter in Mumbai's urban transport journey. Line 3 is Mumbai's first fully underground metro line and runs for 33.5 km, connecting Colaba in South Mumbai to SEEPZ. It includes 27 stations, covering important areas like Churchgate, Dadar, and BKC.
New phase includes major stations and underground river crossing
The second phase that is being launched today covers key stations like Dharavi, Sitaladevi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk. A major highlight of this phase is the part of the metro line that goes under the Mithi River, which shows the great engineering work done during construction.
Metro expansion in stages
Before this, the first phase covering 12.69 km from Aarey JVLR to BKC was already running. With this second phase opening a 9.77 km stretch from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk, more people will benefit from faster and easier travel. Only the final 13 km section from Worli to Cuffe Parade is left. This will be completed in the third and final phase. Once completed, the metro will provide better access to different parts of the city.
Change in inauguration plan and safety approval
Originally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was going to inaugurate this metro line. But due to the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, the plan changed. Now, CM Fadnavis will lead the event. He will also ride the underground metro from BKC to Siddhivinayak as part of the opening.
Although construction of this phase finished in March, the metro needed a safety certificate before opening. Now that the safety clearance is approved, everything is ready for passengers.
This new phase of Metro Line 3 is expected to reduce travel time and offer a more comfortable journey. It shows Mumbai's strong efforts to improve public transport and make daily travel easier for everyone. With Metro Line 3, Mumbai moves closer to a better-connected and commuter-friendly future.
