On Wednesday, September 3, the Maharashtra government approved the Metro Line 11. This new line will run from Wadala to Colaba, near the Gateway of India in South Mumbai. The project, costing around ₹24,000 crore due to extended routes and stations, is expected to reduce traffic between central and south

Mumbai and link with other current and future Metro lines.
Overview of Mumbai's Metro Line 11
Since South Mumbai had no Metro access earlier, even being a key area for business, jobs, and tourism, Line 11 will enhance accessibility between major commercial hubs, Fort, and Colaba. Metro Line 11 will be an extension of the green line with 14 stations and 13 underground, covering 17.5 km from the Anik Bus Depot in Wadala to SPM Circle, near the Gateway of India. The line will pass through busy areas like Sewri, Byculla, Nagpada, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, CSMT, and Horniman Circle before reaching Colaba. This new line will also connect with Metro Line 4 (Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli), making Wadala an important interchange station.
Additional Details of Mumbai's Metro Line 11
The Japan International Cooperation Agency will fund the project, while the Maharashtra government has secured approval for loans and funding. The project has been transferred to MMRC for execution, with pre-construction activities ongoing, and is expected to start in 2027 and be completed by 2030. Metro Line 11 will connect with Line 4 at Wadala and Line 3 at CSMT, with plans for a link to Dharavi, creating a transport hub where the Metro, trains, and buses will meet for easier transfers and faster travel. A report estimates that Line 11 will have 5.8 lakh daily riders in 2031, growing to 10 lakhs by 2055, with trains running every 2.5 minutes at speeds up to 80 km/h.
