Mumbai, India's busy financial hub, is struggling with severe waterlogging after continuous heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the city and nearby districts like Thane, Palghar, and Raigad under a red alert, showing how serious the situation is. The heavy rain has not only disrupted the daily lives of Mumbai's residents but has also caused major problems for both air and rail transport.
Because of the relentless rain, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for schools and colleges. The Mumbai Police have also advised people to stay indoors to stay safe. The heavy rain has led to 14 flights being diverted from Mumbai airport and has delayed or suspended many train services, showing the widespread effect of the rainfall on the city's infrastructure.
One of the most dangerous outcomes of the rain was a landslide that happened on the Mumbra bypass in Thane around 9:30 p.m. on September 25. This landslide caused a traffic jam lasting over three hours, highlighting the challenges caused by the downpour. The Mumbai Traffic Police have been working hard to reroute traffic in several areas. In Andheri, the subway saw water levels rise to two-and-a-half feet, forcing vehicles to be diverted to S V Road. Many areas across the city, including major roads like the Western and Eastern Express Highways, have also been affected. Traffic congestion was reported in areas such as Matunga, Bandra, Oshiwara, Jogeshwari, and Malad.
Despite the difficult weather, train services on the Central, Western, and Harbour lines have resumed. However, passengers have been told to expect delays. The IMD predicts that isolated heavy showers may continue in the region until September 27, meaning the city may face more challenges in the coming days. The traffic police have also pointed out areas with slow-moving traffic due to waterlogging, such as Bhatia Bagh, CST Junction, BMC Road, GPO, and Avtar Singh Bedi, showing how widespread the disruptions are.
