Mumbai's much-awaited Coastal Road Project (MCRP) will open for commuters on Monday, offering a direct connection between the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) and Marine Drive. The road will be accessible from 7 am to 12 am daily, aiming to ease traffic flow along this busy stretch.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate three key interchanges on Sunday, connecting areas like Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, and Lotus Junction. This development marks a major milestone in improving the city's connectivity. However, some parts of the project, including the promenade and three underground parking facilities, will be completed by December 2025.
Faster Route, Less Travel Time
Before this new development, travelers heading south from Mumbai via the BWSL had to take a longer route through Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg in Worli. The southbound arm of the coastal road now provides a direct route to Marine Drive, significantly cutting travel time.
This 827-meter-long stretch includes 699 meters built over the sea and 128 meters of approach road. The construction used 2,400 metric tons of Bow Arch String Girder to form a bridge that is 143 meters long, 27 meters wide, and stands 31 meters tall.
Beautification and Promenade Development
M/s Tata Sons Limited will beautify a 4.35-kilometer median between Priyadarshini Park and Worli as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. This project will be inaugurated on January 26 with a tree-planting ceremony attended by the Chief Minister.
In addition, a 7.5-kilometer promenade will stretch from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy to the Worli end of the sea link. Expected to be completed by May, the promenade will add scenic beauty and recreational space to the area.
Parking and Future Plans
While the BMC has decided to cancel an underground parking project at Amarsons in Breach Candy, three other parking facilities are under construction. These include sites at NSCI Worli, near BinduMadhav Thackeray Chowk, and opposite Dr. Annie Besant Road in Worli, all scheduled for completion by December.
The civic body is also exploring ideas for developing 70 hectares of open space along the Coastal Road. Expressions of interest have been invited from private and public companies, with plans set to unfold over the next 3-4 years.
Mumbai's Infrastructure Boost
The Mumbai Coastal Road spans 10.58 kilometers, from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the BWSL. This ambitious project highlights Mumbai's efforts to enhance its infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, and provide citizens with better connectivity and recreational opportunities.
