Mumbai Airport’s T1 to Close for Renovation, Flights to Shift to Navi Mumbai

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set for a major upgrade, with plans to revamp Terminal 1 to handle more passengers. The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has announced that the renovation will increase the terminal's capacity by 42%, allowing it to accommodate 20 million passengers per year. This expansion aims to meet the rising demand for air travel and provide better facilities for travelers.

Mumbai Airport s T1 to Close

Renovation to Begin in 2025

The renovation work will start in November 2025 and will be completed in different stages to avoid major disruptions. MIAL has assured that airport operations will continue smoothly during the construction. To manage passenger traffic, flights that usually operate from Terminal 1 will temporarily shift to Terminal 2 and the newly opened Navi Mumbai International Airport. This will ensure that travelers face minimal inconvenience.

A Two-Phase Expansion Plan

The redevelopment will be carried out in two phases.

- Phase 1 will focus on demolishing the old structure of Terminal 1 and preparing the foundation for a modern facility.

- Phase 2 will introduce a brand-new terminal with advanced infrastructure, set to be completed by 2029.

This upgrade reflects the airport's dedication to improving passenger experience and handling the increasing number of domestic travelers.

Future Plans for International Integration

The Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), which operates CSMIA, also has long-term plans to merge domestic and international operations. This will provide travelers with a more efficient and seamless airport experience.

The new Terminal 1 will feature:

- Improved cooling systems using advanced landscaping techniques.
- Multipurpose substations to manage airport services more efficiently.
- A modern baggage handling system for faster and smoother luggage processing.

This ambitious project will not only increase capacity but also enhance the quality of services and infrastructure. With these changes, Mumbai Airport is set to remain one of India's most important air travel hubs, catering to the growing number of flyers with better facilities and improved connectivity.
