The Narmada River Bridge is an impressive structure that spans 1.4 kilometers in length. The bridge's considerable length makes it the longest river bridge being built in the Gujarat stretch of the project.

Progress of Construction

The construction of the Narmada River Bridge is moving ahead steadily. The bridge is supported by 25 circular piers with well foundations, a type of deep foundation that ensures stability in challenging environments. Of the 25 wells, 19 have already been completed. The deepest well foundation reaches a depth of 77.11 meters, which is slightly taller than the iconic Qutub Minar in Delhi.

What is a Well Foundation?

A well foundation is a large, hollow, cylindrical structure that is sunk into the ground to provide a strong base for structures like bridges. In this case, it is used to support the piers of the Narmada River Bridge. The well is filled with concrete or other materials to create a stable and secure foundation, especially in areas where the soil may not be strong enough to support heavy loads.

Overcoming Challenges

The construction of the bridge has not been without challenges. In September 2023, the Narmada River experienced floods, which created difficulties for the construction team. However, engineers used the Jack-Down method to address issues related to the tilting and shifting of well foundations. This method is particularly effective in areas with soft soil and ensures the stability of the bridge's foundation, which is critical for supporting the weight of the structure.

Current Status of the Project

Significant progress has been made on the Narmada River Bridge, with girder-launching work already underway from one end of the bridge. The bridge is part of the 237.1 km Package C4, which is being constructed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India's leading construction companies.

Expected Completion

The entire Gujarat stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, including the Narmada River Bridge, is expected to be completed by December 2025. Once finished, this bridge will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and reducing travel time for commuters and travelers.
