India is about to make a big leap in its transport and urban development with the launch of its first bullet train route between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Among the 12 stations on this route, four will receive a special transformation: Virar and Thane in Maharashtra, and Sabarmati and Surat in Gujarat. These stations are being developed as part of the SMART (Station Area Development) initiative, aiming to create modern, well-connected hubs that benefit both travelers and local communities.
The SMART initiative focuses on creating seamless connectivity through a network of metro, bus, and taxi services. This means that passengers will find it easier to switch between different types of transport, saving time and reducing traffic congestion. These improvements will help make travel smoother while also lowering pollution in urban areas, which supports a more sustainable future for cities.
At the core of the SMART initiative is a concept called Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). This approach focuses on turning the areas around the stations into lively, multipurpose spaces. The idea is to have offices, hotels, schools, and hospitals all within walking distance of these stations, creating convenient, self-sustaining communities. This will not only make commuting easier for people but will also boost the local economy by generating jobs and supporting businesses around these station areas.
The development around these stations will take place in phases. First, facilities like pickup and drop-off points, parking areas, and passenger plazas will be set up to meet the needs of commuters. Later, development will spread to a 500-meter radius around each station, which will require updates to city plans and improvements in infrastructure, such as road expansions.
Looking even further ahead, this development will extend up to 800 meters from each station over the next decade. This long-term approach aligns with the larger vision for sustainable urban growth in these cities. The aim is to create livable neighborhoods around the bullet train stations, attracting more people and businesses to these areas.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is responsible for building the stations and nearby facilities, including parking and easy connections to existing transport. After the stations open, city authorities will work on improving road access and supporting infrastructure in the first decade, while state government and urban planners focus on expanding development over the following 10 to 20 years.
This ambitious project marks a new era in India's transportation and urban development. With the SMART initiative and TOD principles, these station areas are set to become bustling centers of activity and growth, enhancing convenience and driving economic progress for years to come.
