India's dream of a high-speed rail network is witnessing a shift as plans for the introduction of Shinkansen bullet trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor face delays. Originally expected to begin operations by 2026, the iconic Japanese bullet trains are now projected to debut in 2030, with full-scale operations likely by 2033. To bridge the gap, India is focusing on upgrading its rail infrastructure with cutting-edge technology for the Vande Bharat trains, marking a significant step forward in modernizing the nation's railways.
Delays in Shinkansen's Arrival
The Shinkansen trains, famous for their speed and efficiency, were set to revolutionize travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. However, unforeseen challenges have pushed back their timelines. Despite the delay, India is not slowing down its progress in high-speed rail development. Instead, the focus has shifted to implementing advanced signalling systems for the Vande Bharat trains, capable of reaching speeds of up to 280 km/h.
New Signalling System for Vande Bharat
To ensure progress in rail modernization, the Ministry of Railways is procuring the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level-2 for the Vande Bharat trains. Unlike the Japanese DS-ATC system planned for the Shinkansen, the ETCS-2 will support the immediate needs of India's rail network. This seven-year contract aims to make the ETCS-2 system operational by 2027, paving the way for the commercial launch of high-speed Vande Bharat services.
This strategic move highlights India's commitment to building versatile infrastructure. While the ETCS-2 system will initially cater to Vande Bharat trains, the option to integrate the Japanese signalling system for the Shinkansen remains open, ensuring flexibility in future operations.
