Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Tamil Nadu in mid-January 2026, likely from January 13 to 15, during the Pongal festival period. This will be his first time celebrating the harvest festival with farmers in the state. The visit is seen as an important part of the BJP's

efforts to reach out to rural voters and increase its influence in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Inauguration of Chennai Metro Phase II
During his trip, Modi is also likely to inaugurate a section of the Chennai Metro Phase 2 project, specifically the new metro stretch from Poonamallee to Porur, which is about 10 km long. This corridor is part of the bigger Phase 2 metro expansion of around 116 km, and it will operate with a driverless metro system. The inauguration would be alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
The schedule is not yet fully confirmed, but senior leaders say that combining Pongal celebrations with the metro opening could help the BJP make a stronger connection with both rural and urban communities. Modi may start in Trichy, travel by helicopter to Pudukkottai for a BJP programme, and take part in state festivities.
Political Agenda Behind the Visit
Some political analysts see the visit as part of the BJP's strategic push in the state, even though it does not necessarily aim to win power in 2026. Instead, the party hopes to build groundwork for future years by showcasing its cultural engagement and development projects. However, other commentators are unsure whether these efforts alone will persuade Tamil voters, especially after disagreements over metro projects in Coimbatore and Madurai and other local issues.
Moreover, the planned visit is both a cultural gesture and a political move ahead of state elections, reflecting the party's long-term ambitions in Tamil Nadu.
