Mumbai is ready to further expand its metro rail network, with two new metro sections expected to open by the end of this month, officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said. Parts of Metro Line 9 and Metro Line 2B will become operational by December 31, marking the first phase of both projects.

Mumbai Metro Line 9
The first stretch of Metro Line 9 will run between Dahisar East and Kashigaon. Metro Line 2B's initial section will operate between Diamond Garden and Mandale. Officials said safety clearance for Line 9 is likely to be granted soon by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, even as the model code of conduct is in force ahead of local body elections. The inauguration of both metro stretches is expected to be done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Metro Line 9 is an extension of the existing Line 7 and is a 13.58-kilometre elevated corridor. It connects Dahisar East with the fast-developing Mira-Bhayandar area. This new route is expected to greatly improve travel for commuters heading towards the northern suburbs by cutting down journey time and reducing dependence on road transport.
Mumbai Metro Line 2B
Metro Line 2B, which will eventually run from DN Nagar in Andheri West to Mandale in Mankhurd, is still under construction. Trial runs are currently underway on its first phase, a 5.3-kilometre stretch between Mandale and Diamond Garden in Chembur. According to officials, the second phase of Line 2B, from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar, is planned to open by next summer. After that, only the middle section between Saraswat Nagar and Diamond Garden will remain to be completed.
Metro Line 2B's Stations
Once fully operational, the 23.6-kilometre Metro Line 2B will have 20 stations and serve as Mumbai's second major east-west metro corridor. Overall, the expansion of these metro lines is expected to reduce traffic congestion, promote cleaner and greener travel, and make daily commuting faster and more convenient for residents across Mumbai's suburbs.
