Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will keep the existing fare structure unchanged when services begin on the Phase II network. A journey from Poonamallee to Vadapalani will cost ₹40, according to the fare details released for the new corridor.
Chennai Metro Phase II Fare Structure Released
The first Phase II stretch, connecting Poonamallee Bypass with Vadapalani through Porur, covers 14.64 km. The fare for this section will range from ₹10 to ₹40. A journey between Poonamallee Bypass and Poonamallee Bus Stand will cost ₹10, while travel to stations such as Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi and Kattupakkam will cost ₹20.
Passengers travelling towards Iyyappanthangal and stations around Porur will have to pay ₹30. The maximum fare of ₹40 will apply to passengers travelling from Poonamallee to Vadapalani.
CMRL has also stated that when passengers switch between Phase I and Phase II services and travel longer distances, the maximum fare will be capped at ₹50, which will apply to journeys connecting Poonamallee with destinations in north Chennai, including Wimco Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, Kaladipet and Washermanpet, as well as destinations in the south such as Chennai Airport.
Passengers will be eligible for a 20% discount on all tickets except paper QR tickets purchased directly at station counters.
The 14.6-km corridor will have 10 stations between Poonamallee and Porur, although only the Vadapalani connection will initially be available for passengers. Several stations, including Alapakkam, Karambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Saligramam Warehouse and Saligramam, are facing construction delays and may take a few more months to be completed.
The fare structure is being introduced as Chennai awaits the opening of the first operational stretch of Phase II, which forms part of the larger 118.9-km Phase II Metro project.
