Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has proposed building about 3 km of underground pedestrian tunnels to make it easier for people to reach and leave two major stations on the fully underground Metro Line 3, the Science Centre in Worli and BKC. A new request for proposals mentions three major

underground corridors that will connect the metro stations to busy public places, cultural centres, and the upcoming bullet train terminal.
Longest of Three Planned Tunnels
The longest of the three planned tunnels is a 1.4 km stretch in BKC. This tunnel will connect the Metro Line 3 station directly to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail terminal through Tata Colony. It will serve as an all-weather walkway, and passengers can shift between the metro and the bullet train without going outside.
Planning of Two Tunnels
In Worli, MMRC has planned two tunnels from the Science Centre station. The first is a 1.1 km tunnel going toward the Worli promenade and will pass under the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. The second is a shorter 500-metre tunnel towards Nehru Planetarium, which will make it easier for people to access the cultural area and reduce traffic at street level. According to MMRC planning director R. Ramanna, these underground walkways will provide safe, weather-proof paths for pedestrians while reducing crowding on the surface in some of Mumbai's busiest zones.
The tunnels will be about 5 metres wide and will include escalators or lifts at the entry points. The project is expected to cost around ₹250 crore, with MMRC and BMC sharing the expenses. The plan follows transit-oriented development rules under DCPR 33(23), which give extra construction rights to developers within 500 metres of Metro Line 3 stations if they connect buildings directly to the pedestrian corridors.
Project Construction Planning
MMRC will soon hire a consultant to handle detailed surveys, design work, and construction planning. The project is expected to be completed between 2029 and 2030. Once ready, the tunnels are expected to improve metro ridership. Similar pedestrian links are already present or being built at Airport Terminal 2 and CSMT.
