Meerut Metro will become the fastest metro system in India from Sunday, operating at a top speed of 120 kmph. This is the same maximum speed as the Airport Express Line in Delhi, which provides a quick connection to Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Meerut Metro will run on the same tracks and infrastructure as the semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains.

Airport Express Line in Delhi
The Airport Express Line became the country's fastest metro corridor in September 2023. When it first started, trains operated at 90 kmph. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation gradually increased the speed over six months to reach 120 kmph. On most regular Delhi Metro lines, trains usually run at an average speed of about 75 kmph. The 24.9-km Airport Express Line has seven stations and takes 21 minutes to travel from New Delhi to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25. The journey from Shivaji Stadium to IGI Airport Terminal 3 takes around 15 minutes. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the 21-km Meerut Metro corridor with 12 stations on Sunday, passengers will be able to travel from Meerut South to Modipuram in about 30 minutes.
Namo Bharat & Meerut Metro
On Friday, a special Meerut Metro train carrying journalists ran from Begumpul to Meerut South on the rapid rail tracks. Both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro trains were seen stationed face-to-face. Officials said that using the same infrastructure will allow passengers to switch easily between the two services, making travel smooth and comfortable.
Meerut Metro Train Facilities
Meerut Metro trains will have three coaches with both 2x2 and longitudinal seating, and they can carry over 700 passengers, with 173 seats available. The coaches are air-conditioned and equipped with luggage racks, grab handles, CCTV cameras, USB charging points, and digital route maps. Seats will also be reserved for women and senior citizens in every coach.
