Meerut Metro Moves Closer to Reality: Full Operations Soon, Major Stations Revealed

The trial runs for the Meerut Metro began on Sunday, marking an important milestone in improving public transportation in the region. The first trials were conducted from Meerut South to the area near Meerut Central Station, focusing on testing the tracks and traction systems. Initially, the trains were controlled manually using the Train Control Management System (TCMS), moving at a slow speed towards the underground section near Meerut Central before returning at a higher speed.

Rigorous Testing for Safe Operations

The trials will continue with trains running at speeds ranging from 40 km/h to their maximum of 135 km/h. These tests are essential to ensure the metro system operates smoothly when it becomes fully functional. Safety assessments, including weight tests with sandbags and dynamic safety checks, are being conducted in line with international safety standards to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers.

Features of the Meerut Metro

The Meerut Metro is designed to provide a comfortable and secure experience for passengers. The system includes twelve three-coach trainsets built in Savli, Gujarat, with ten already delivered to the Duhai depot. These trains come with air conditioning, ergonomic seating, luggage space, grab handles, USB charging ports, and other passenger-friendly features.

The metro corridor spans 23 kilometers, including 18 kilometers of elevated tracks and 5 kilometers underground, with 13 stations. Among these, three stations- Meerut Central, Bhainsali, and Begumpul-will be underground. Notably, the Meerut Metro will share infrastructure with the semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains, a first in India. Major stations like Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram will serve both services, ensuring better connectivity.

Advancements in Regional Transit

During the trials, various systems, including signaling, platform screen doors (PSD), and overhead power supply mechanisms, are being tested. The trains are also navigating different curves on the route to guarantee passenger comfort. These efforts align with broader initiatives to improve connectivity and reduce travel time within the region.

Part of a Larger Transportation Vision

The Meerut Metro is part of a larger vision for regional transit improvements. Other projects include extending the Delhi Metro Yellow Line to Narela and introducing eco-friendly ropeway connectivity across the Yamuna. Additionally, the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is nearing completion, with its Delhi section set to be inaugurated soon by Prime Minister Modi.

The trial runs for the Meerut Metro are a significant step towards transforming public transit in the region. Once operational, the metro will provide faster, safer, and more efficient travel options, making life easier for commuters and supporting regional growth.
