A Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus traveling from Bengaluru to Mumbai became the target of violence, leading to the suspension of bus services between the two states. The incident happened shortly after the bus crossed Chitradurga, where pro-Kannada activists attacked the driver, Bhaskar Jadhav. Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik took immediate action, stopping all MSRTC buses to Karnataka until further notice. A complaint has been filed with the local Karnataka police to address the attack.

Clash Over Language in Karnataka
The tensions between Maharashtra and Karnataka escalated further when a Karnataka State Transport bus conductor, Mahadevappa Mallappa Hukkeri (51), was attacked for not speaking Marathi. The incident took place near Belagavi, where a passenger and her companion, who were speaking in Marathi, became aggressive when Hukkeri asked them to converse in Kannada. The argument quickly turned into an attack, leaving Hukkeri with minor injuries. He was admitted to the hospital but is now in stable condition.
Protests and Police Action
Following these violent incidents, protests erupted on both sides. In Karnataka, pro-Kannada groups blocked roads, burned effigies, and demanded justice for Hukkeri. They gathered at Marihal police station to express their anger before the police dispersed them. Meanwhile, Karnataka police arrested four people involved in attacking Hukkeri, who also faces charges under the POCSO Act for allegedly making inappropriate remarks.
Linguistic Tensions Rise
These events highlight the ongoing language-based tensions between Maharashtra and Karnataka. The attack on the MSRTC bus and the assault on the Karnataka bus conductor both reflect deep-seated linguistic and cultural differences that sometimes lead to violence. Hukkeri's case, in particular, shows how language barriers can quickly escalate into physical confrontations.
Maharashtra's Decision to Suspend Bus Services
To protect passengers and staff, Maharashtra has halted all state transport buses to Karnataka. Minister Pratap Sarnaik emphasized that the suspension will remain in effect until the Karnataka government provides clarity on safety measures. Maharashtra's transport department sees this as an important step to ensure the safety of travelers.
These incidents have disrupted travel between Maharashtra and Karnataka, bringing the sensitive issue of language identity into focus. The clashes serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural understanding and peaceful coexistence. Authorities from both states will need to work together to restore normalcy and ensure safe travel for everyone.
