The Maharashtra government has approved Metro Line 8, also known as the "Gold Line", to improve transportation between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). This metro line will make airport transfers smoother and provide better public transport for travelers.

A Key Step in Mumbai's Metro Plan
Metro Line 8 is a major part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) Metro Master Plan. It will cover a distance of 35 km, passing through Kurla and Mankhurd, and will connect with Metro Line 2B. This will help reduce travel time between Mumbai's two airports and improve public transport in the city.
Currently, Navi Mumbai International Airport can be accessed via the Atal Setu, and its connectivity will further improve with the completion of the Worli-Sewri connector. The new metro line is expected to become operational by mid-2025 and will make traveling between the two airports much easier.
Public-Private Partnership Model
The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model will be used to develop this metro line. This decision was confirmed by a Government Resolution on January 27, though the plan was first proposed in May 2024. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has been appointed as the nodal agency responsible for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and overseeing the project's progress.
Metro Line 8: Route and Features
The Gold Line will have a mix of elevated and underground tracks:
- 25.8 km of elevated tracks
- 8.2 km of underground tracks
- 20 metro stations along the route
In addition to connecting the two airports, Metro Line 8 will also link Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and a proposed Interstate Bus Terminal in Mankhurd. This will improve travel for both airport passengers and daily commuters, making transport in Mumbai more efficient.
Project Cost and Timeline
The total cost of the Metro Line 8 project is estimated to be Rs 15,000 crore (as of 2023). The construction work is expected to take six years to complete. While the PPP model has faced financial challenges in past projects like Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar-Versova), the government remains confident in its success.
A New Era for Mumbai's Transport
With better airport connectivity, improved public transport, and an extensive metro network, Metro Line 8 will bring major benefits to Mumbai's commuters. This project represents a huge investment in urban mobility, making travel faster, easier, and more comfortable for millions of people in the city.
