With the Maha Kumbh festival in full swing, Prayagraj is experiencing a massive surge in travelers. This increase is reflected in rising flight bookings and significantly higher airfares from major Indian cities. The demand for tickets has driven prices to unprecedented levels, particularly from cities like Bhopal, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, as people flock to the city for this grand spiritual event.
Airfare Hike for Maha Kumbh Travelers
According to travel platform ixigo, airfares from Bhopal to Prayagraj have seen the sharpest increase, jumping 498% compared to last year. Tickets that previously cost ₹2,977 now reach ₹17,796 for one-way fares booked 30 days in advance during the festival period from January 13 to February 26, 2025. Other cities have also seen steep price hikes, with fares from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru rising by 21%, 13%, and 89%, respectively.
The peak demand is especially evident as the festival's key bathing dates approach. For instance, one-way tickets from Mumbai to Prayagraj have skyrocketed to ₹27,000 on certain dates like January 27. Flights from Ahmedabad to Prayagraj have also seen a 41% increase in ticket prices.
Improved Air Connectivity to Prayagraj
The city has significantly improved its air connectivity since the last Maha Kumbh 12 years ago. Prayagraj now has direct and one-stop flights to over 20 destinations, compared to just one connection from Delhi in the past. This has led to a 162% rise in flight bookings to Prayagraj during the festival period.
Nearby cities like Lucknow and Varanasi, which serve as alternative gateways for festival-goers, have also experienced increased travel demand. Lucknow has seen a 42% rise in bookings, while Varanasi has witnessed an impressive 127% increase.
Rising Train Bookings Amid Airfare Surge
The steep rise in airfares has also led to a surge in train bookings to Prayagraj. Travelers are exploring more affordable options as they plan their journeys to witness this rare celestial event. The Maha Kumbh, held after 12 years, is considered even more auspicious this time due to unique planetary alignments occurring after 144 years, according to spiritual leaders.
Aloke Bajpai, CEO of the Ixigo Group, explained, "One-way airfares from major cities to Prayagraj are averaging ₹7,000-10,000 for tickets booked 30 days in advance. However, on high-demand routes like Bhopal-Prayagraj, fares have reached up to ₹17,000 due to limited flight availability."

As travelers flock to this spiritual event, the city's improved connectivity and cultural significance make it a key destination for devotees and tourists alike.
