The Leh - Manali National Highway, which had been closed since November last year due to heavy snowfall, has now been reopened by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) specifically for the movement of army vehicles. The snow clearance operations were carried out by Project Himank in Leh and Project Deepak in Himachal Pradesh.
The snow clearance operations were exceptionally challenging, especially at high mountain passes like Baralacha La, Lachung La, and Tanglang La, all situated at an altitude of over 15 thousand feet.
A significant event called the 'Golden Handshake' ceremony was held at the Sarchu border as the two teams from Leh and Himachal Pradesh converged at a common point. As of now, the highway is accessible only for Army convoys. The decision to allow access for locals and tourists will be taken by the District Disaster Management Authorities in subsequent periods.
Spanning 427 kilometers, the Leh-Manali National Highway holds strategic importance as it links Ladakh to the rest of India via Manali.
